The Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce is hosting the 11th Annual Salute to Healthcare banquet on Thursday, November 8th at the Pitser Garrison Convention Center.

The annual banquet honors the medical and healthcare professionals we have in Angelina County.  An award ceremony recognizes the exemplary achievements of several individuals in the local medical community.  Four awards are given: Nurse of the Year, Healthcare Professional of the Year, Individual of Merit, and a special Lifetime Achievement Award.

This year’s banquet features guest speaker, Dr. Jeremy Lyon, a retired superintendent of Frisco ISD who has had a 31 year career in education.  Since his retirement in 2017 he has worked with the youth division of the Cooper Institute and has formed a consulting business to help school leaders implement strategies to improve health and wellness.  During his career as an educator he served as a teacher, coach, principal, and for 14 years as a superintendent.  While at Frisco, he spearheaded a district strategy that embraced the Whole Child concept of balancing academics with physical, social, and emotional support for students.  He also led Frisco ISD in creating public-private partnerships with Baylor Scott & White Hospital and the Dallas Cowboys, centered on creating opportunities for all students to learn and participate in safe and healthy activities.

Dr. Lyon received his Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M University in 1984 and completed his doctoral degree in school administration from the University of Texas at Austin.  He was a fellow of the Cooperative Superintendent Program at U.T. Austin and part of the 1999 cohort of graduates.

Dr. Lyon was recognized in 2012 by the American School Health Association as the recipient of the National Superintendent’s School Health Leadership award.  He was the first school superintendent to serve on an affiliate board of the American Heart Association.  He is passionate about improving student and staff fitness and health within schools and school districts.

The reception begins at 6:00PM, and the Banquet will begin at 7:00PM.  Tickets to the banquet are $40 per person and reserved tables are $500 with preferred seating for 8 people.  For more information about this event and to purchase tickets, please contact The Chamber at (936) 634-6644.

This program is supported in part by an educational grant from the Angelina County Medical Society.
